Interior Windows and Window Treatments
Interior windows are effective at reducing the noise from emergency sirens, airplanes, car alarms and vehicle traffic. It is not effective at reducing low frequency noise such as boom cars and motorcycles. The level of noise reduction is relative to building construction and distance to noise sources.
The window glass is made from lexan, a thermoplastic. It works by creating a barrier of dead air between the outer and interior window space.
If you use a window air conditioner in warmer months, you may have to decide how much noise reduction relative to air cooling you need. You can use the air conditioner for a few hours to cool the room and then fully close the interior window. The windows eliminate drafts so the room will stay cooler for a longer period of time.
You also lose the sounds of nature but it may prove to be an acceptable tradeoff to the noise and stress. The cost of the windows ranges in price from $1,500 - $2,000 per window, including the cost of installation.
