Turn It Down or Pay Up!

The Gulfport Police Department in Mississippi is cracking down on illegal loud music that allows residents to report offenders on their website. They launched a campaign to raise public awareness of the city's noise ordinance, which sets a penalty of up to $1,000 for disturbing the peace of others. The campaign slogan is "Turn it down or pay up. Your music. Your money."

To report loud music from boom cars: go to the Gulfport Police Department. You need to provide the following: date, time, location, license plate number, vehicle description and driver description.

Hancock County Considers Sound Ordinance on Boom Cars

In 2005, Hancock County supervisors sought public input on a sound ordinance, which would outlaw music that can be heard fifty feet or more from a vehicle. Offenders could face fines up to $500 and one day in jail for each violation. The ordinance also would require animal lovers to keep their pet's noise level to a minimum, and vehicles registered in the county will need a muffler or "sound dissipating device."
